I'm eager to try some new things and to use more color. Like a lot of my recent paintings, this rug will be very linear. In the last couple of weeks I have been working out the design for a new rug. Last night when I sat down to play with the composition, I dug through my handbag and alas, no sketchbook. (Sadface).KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123089851722491314.post-84874548656044142082009-09-18T19:58:00.000-07:002009-09-18T20:19:40.833-07:00Finished Rug...Well AlmostAfter a very long time working on this rug, I am glad to say that it is done. The edge needs to be finished, but I may save that for when I need to practice and learn the technique.
Since the rug design was simple I was able to learn some querks of different types of wool. I used two different "whites" in this rug, both bought off the bolt. The first wool (the dirtier looking of the two) frayed like crazy and was incredibly hard to work with, which is why this rug took so long to complete. When that fabric ran out I was glad to try something else with a little more substance and weight.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 264px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SrRJZ5flreI/AAAAAAAAApQ/nQ3JMPeaXE8/s320/DSC04088.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383008163893456354" />
This is a close up to show the patterns created by the hooked rows. I think this is one of the things that first drew me to look at hooked rugs (click to enlarge).
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SrRJZVG8gJI/AAAAAAAAApI/YlQQpYi_Bds/s320/DSC04085.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383008154126418066" />
And, the finished project. I already have something in mind for my next rug. This piece is my leaning piece and am ready to get it out of my face and make something a little more in line with my aesthetic and painting style. (Do I even have claim on that anymore?)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 257px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SrRJY3BsU0I/AAAAAAAAApA/cpb-Aqv0wqU/s320/DSC04084.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383008146051322690" />

Non-rug news:
This summer we/I went to Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, Florida, Oklahoma and Boston (actually twice to Boston). Pierson started Nursery School this week and I'll probably be having a baby soon. The new fabric has speed up my process a million times and am glad I learned how to choose good wool so soon. And now, since Pierson is starting Nursery School in the fall, I will have a few free hours to scour Manhattan Thrift Stores for fabric to re-use.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Smj9qVzJvOI/AAAAAAAAAo0/lxktbC3FChw/s320/K5" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361814260232600802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Smj9qAd_WLI/AAAAAAAAAos/U6nVM9JX7tI/s320/K4" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361814254506694834" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Smj9p82jrsI/AAAAAAAAAok/-LkBDUHI7mA/s320/K3" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361814253535997634" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 291px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Smj9pcq-9HI/AAAAAAAAAoc/_oMlP6rL0PU/s320/K2" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361814244897518706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Smj9oznLkjI/AAAAAAAAAoU/srfZzJXbu7s/s320/K1" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361814233875714610" />

I'm in Las Vegas for a week partying hard with my sisters and Pierson. (My mom would go to this theatre when she was young to see movies.) We would mostly go to shows at PABCO, the caves, the dry lakebeds, and the wash. All on the outskirts of the valley, unofficial and powered by generators. And, as a young girl, I could always get in without paying the $3 asked. Those were the days.

Last, for now, the empty casinos with lax security that we would occasionally sneak into and play around in. I'm sure this was totally unsafe (as were a lot of the things I did) but it was fun to see old Las Vegas frozen in time.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sj74tt3DWNI/AAAAAAAAAk4/mRK0vMB9TUk/s320/el+rancho.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349986871651031250" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sj75EPLxMMI/AAAAAAAAAlA/pxwxzE0M9LQ/s320/el+rancho2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349987258553413826" />

Just a simple guide, if you plan to visit Vegas in the 90's as a teenager.
Now back to rug hooking and baby growing.KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123089851722491314.post-19379231106412100102009-05-02T19:37:00.000-07:002009-05-02T20:28:01.419-07:00A Weekend AwayLast weekend, Pierson and I joined Mike in DC. While Mike was busy conferencing, we went to a few choice Smithsonian Museums. Like usual, I was able to trick the boys into seeing some art. We visited the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden late Sunday morning.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sf0EZUTTyNI/AAAAAAAAAiw/YI1y_Xs1KBY/s320/01.11.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331422366869473490" />

Walking through the first gallery, Pierson saw the painting above by Cecily Brown, and yelled, "Mom, it's your painting." While it's not completely my style, the Brown's palette would definitely fit with some of my work. In High School my friend Jay and I would joke in our shared studio in the back of the art department about getting ourselves famous. While I may not achieved the fame status, I am totally famous in my 3-year-old's head. What a nice feeling to know that he notices my work and knows that I love making art.

In the Hirshorn we were able to see a couple of artist that I had recently seen here in New York, but I was glad to see them again:

There was an entire floor of Louise Bourgeois' work. I am always reminded of what art really is when I see her work. She seems to have done work in every medium and at every scale. I love how honest her work feels and hope that one day I can be just like her.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sf0Kynib3TI/AAAAAAAAAjI/6Lma5ED_xPM/s320/T06899_9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331429398599687474" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 273px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sf0Kyt_gyEI/AAAAAAAAAjA/KavpLm6pQ9Y/s320/bourgeois_misformother.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331429400332257346" />

I was pleasantly surprised to see one of Ron Mureck's sculptures hidden away in the basement.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sf0Kyz11PpI/AAAAAAAAAjQ/jVlAlPLMNyw/s320/01.4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331429401902268050" />

And an old friend, Jean Dubuffet was represented also.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sf0KyNvb-_I/AAAAAAAAAi4/FLs47gCEBZI/s320/72.101.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331429391674899442" />

Love love loved it!KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123089851722491314.post-2736342544618876482009-05-01T13:20:00.000-07:002009-05-01T13:40:57.069-07:00Here's to 5 years<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SftZspPbDaI/AAAAAAAAAio/vEPZx-Ek8NU/s400/IMG_0106.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330953207442771362" />

Thanks Mike for supporting my artwork and all the craziness that it brings!KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123089851722491314.post-62088077775962130232009-03-16T10:17:00.000-07:002009-03-20T05:59:02.336-07:00Fell Free to be Jealous<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 210px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/ScD-rhrs7iI/AAAAAAAAAiY/8W2MGkwsCL0/s320/131882_l.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314527584026684962" />
I will be hanging out in Palm Harbor, Florida for the next week and a half. It never comes down to something so mathematical as to say the materials cost 'X', I worked on this piece for a total of 'Y' hours and my hourly wage is 'Z' dollars, so therefore this painting is worth X + (YxZ). To me it seems like a game, if you go too high, you won't sell anything. If you go too low, then you just look silly.
After presenting my work to a group of young girls along with my friend Candice Stringham, I had been thinking a lot about my worth as an artist and my artistic value. I am quite an idealist when it comes to my work and would like everyone who wants one of my paintings to be able to have one, not mater what they could afford. But, what would happen to the worth of my work if I sold on a sliding scale, advertising "tell me what you can spare and we'll settle on that."KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123089851722491314.post-11109304833411103522009-03-12T13:50:00.000-07:002009-03-12T14:27:30.334-07:00Guys DayToday is an unofficial guys day and Mike took Pierson into his office, giving me a whole day of freedom. It's a slow, steady process and while working I wonder how women made rugs to cover their entire homes. Yikes!

Generally I complete a painting in a couple of weeks (at most), and so, I always have new ideas rolling around in my head. It's so difficult for me to stay on task and finish what I have started because my mind is accustomed to moving on to the next thing by now.

Although I'm really wishing I wouldn't have started 'hooking' with such ambitious work and I miss using a paint brush, I don't want to sweep this under the rug before letting it reach it's potential. So, I'm getting off the computer and getting to work!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sa8tnw9SJLI/AAAAAAAAAg0/1FvKBk5MNaw/s320/DSC03561.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309512646873195698" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sa8tntc--DI/AAAAAAAAAgs/1oo21enmLKA/s320/DSC03564.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309512645932415026" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/Sa34wE1y82I/AAAAAAAAAgk/R3s_x91qH_I/s320/DSC03544.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309173040556471138" />KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123089851722491314.post-29808641504359690312009-02-20T06:07:00.000-08:002009-02-23T21:13:20.839-08:00My Little Sisters (well a couple of them)I vaguely remember my sisters Jamie and Lynzie when they were young. There are five years between Jamie and I and seven between Lynzie. I do remember when Jamie was born and I was relieved to have a sister and get some freedom from my two brothers. But as her and I grew up we were too far apart to really hang out. Then, when Jamie was starting college she came and lived with me. That's when I realized what a talented sister I had (...even if her talent at that time was making out with boys).

Here are a couple of her photographs. They are of our grandparents in Las Vegas:

Then, after I got married, Lynzie blossomed. So I dug up a few of the pictures that I actually have in digital format from school. Even though it was only 4 years ago, my life and my art are definitely different. But it is nice to remember being surrounded by other artists and fitting into a small supportive community.

I wish I could find some pictures from even earlier...one day I'll dig up a box of photos circa 2000/01 and we will all have a 'good ol times' moment.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SZT6vHzrJSI/AAAAAAAAAfU/6tH0HRLH3fw/s320/IMG_0209.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302138348778497314" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 238px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SZT6uz6dK6I/AAAAAAAAAfM/Jrm8fkV8Sdo/s320/IMG_0176.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302138343438232482" />

These are some small paintings on paper that I did and then left in library book, where I thought they might belong. If you happened to find one, good for you! Although some of the books I used probably hadn't been checked out since the 80s.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SZT6vVpIBlI/AAAAAAAAAfk/ffsAa2PGHWs/s320/IMG_0360.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302138352492349010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SZT6vFRT5CI/AAAAAAAAAfc/xxhsZBsio2A/s320/IMG_0354.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302138348097496098" />

And here are a couple of shots of my undergrad studio. That's what my paintings do for me. As I go through the process of painting I am usually meditating on my life. When I see the paintings I was working on while I was pregnant with Pierson, I recall how weird my body felt and how I was filled with hope and fear. All-in-all this painting marks a change in my life. Whether it's good or bad, only time will tell. But hopefully in 30 years I can see it and breathe a sigh of relief and have a feeling of success.

PS. It's been way too long. Why does it seem like I've been saying that to everyone lately? I could ramble with excuse after excuse, but the one thing that has killed my posting is my formerly broken camera. I'm not one to search blogs for something good to read, but rather something good to look at. So, since that's my disposition, I totally blog that way. Images images and images! I don't think I could post without a picture to back it up.

In July or August, I can't remember which, I was able to visit my lovely friend and sister-in-law's studio at Claremont. Sometimes I think if her and I were meshed into one we would be like the perfect person (or maybe just artist). She has been painting on Yuppo and until my visit in the summer, I had only heard her talk about it and I had seen a couple images of her new work. When I saw the way the watercolor melted on the paper I thought--this is ridiculous (like the good kind)! And since my studio space was having some fire code problems/repairs for a seriously long time, I decided I would try the paper out in my own way.

So here are 2 drawings that resulted:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 298px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SSHPICBRHyI/AAAAAAAAAcM/8cNBZJtL-Nk/s400/yello+yuppo+lines" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269720775888281378" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SSHOG7fVsSI/AAAAAAAAAcE/sDg9bPq8LPo/s400/color+yuppo+bangs" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269719657443864866" />

P.S. I only had about an hour before we had to hop on the train and head home for bedtime. But in that hour I found some new favorites and was totally re-convert to Louis Bourgeois.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SNkyLD6twqI/AAAAAAAAAUU/DXfv3g6tMY8/s400/LB%23.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249282006288548514" />

Her ability to transcend the medium is inspirational. And her subject matter is sincere--revolving around life, humanity and relationships. I enjoyed the aesthetic of her new rooms/cells. And Pierson favored the towers (I know because he kept telling me that he wanted to knock them over).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SNk89M-PwDI/AAAAAAAAAUs/LradBac2uT0/s400/LB1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249293862829015090" />

I had a few favorite drawings, but haven't been able to find images of them online. They were part of Bourgeois work that I had never seen before.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SNk7M9LPrMI/AAAAAAAAAUk/_Z8KUFamqSA/s400/LB2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249291934443220162" />

Bourgeois is apparent in all her work--from drawing to created environments--but the work also develops with the time and the course of the art world. Bravo!

Pierson's second favorite thing (not part of the show):

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DHSFPAKoaPE/SNk9OTh8fCI/AAAAAAAAAU0/gbriGv_X8cg/s200/thegugg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249294156647136290" />KRISTINhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15357535936492421095noreply@blogger.com312
