Sweet Family

Maybe it's because Mike studies (or studied) linguistics, or maybe it's because I know how funny translation between languages can be, but I really love this fruit container. Courtesy of The Great Wall Supermarket in Dyker Heights...or is it Sunset Park.

In the Beginning

After gathering materials and machines I am finally working on my first hooked rug. I'm starting with just a couple of colors and a simple organic pattern.



I got my hands on a used puritan portable frame (thank you ebay).



And I decided to start with the Frasier Bliss Model A fabric cutter.



And a selection of wool gathered from the Good Will, Salvation Army, Mood Fabric, and Green Mountain Wool.


So, here we go!

We Are A Family

Mike's high school friend took this portrait of us as part of her MFA application portfolio. It was fun just sitting in the living room letting Pierson go bonkers and chat with Bekah while she snapped maybe ninty shots of our little family.

Last But Not Least

With a job loss in our family, a new job, a (seemingly new) child, and new responsibilities, this painting is a marker for me.

Do you ever smell something, or hear a certain song, or eat something and then get a flood of memories? That's what my paintings do for me. As I go through the process of painting I am usually meditating on my life. When I see the paintings I was working on while I was pregnant with Pierson, I recall how weird my body felt and how I was filled with hope and fear. All-in-all this painting marks a change in my life. Whether it's good or bad, only time will tell. But hopefully in 30 years I can see it and breathe a sigh of relief and have a feeling of success.

PS. I promise to stop being so secretive soon.

The Resurrection

I know, I know. It's been way too long. Why does it seem like I've been saying that to everyone lately? I could ramble with excuse after excuse, but the one thing that has killed my posting is my formerly broken camera. I'm not one to search blogs for something good to read, but rather something good to look at. So, since that's my disposition, I totally blog that way. Images images and images! I don't think I could post without a picture to back it up.

In July or August, I can't remember which, I was able to visit my lovely friend and sister-in-law's studio at Claremont. Sometimes I think if her and I were meshed into one we would be like the perfect person (or maybe just artist). She has been painting on Yuppo and until my visit in the summer, I had only heard her talk about it and I had seen a couple images of her new work. When I saw the way the watercolor melted on the paper I thought--this is ridiculous (like the good kind)! And since my studio space was having some fire code problems/repairs for a seriously long time, I decided I would try the paper out in my own way.

So here are 2 drawings that resulted:

I really really really want to learn to hook rugs.




Last year I went and saw the The Great Cover Up at the American Museum of Folk Art, and I was blown away. And now, with the impending winter, I'm feeling the vibes.
